Someone once said to Arnold that there are two types of people in life, ‘a person who allows their situation to dictate how they progress, and stoic individuals, individuals who look to get on with life regardless of the obstacles laid before them’. Arnold’s life is parallel to the second type of person given his miraculous recovery from a near fatal car accident on March 13th 2006. This near death experience made Arnold determined to make a difference and strive to succeed in life.

The initial success milestone occurred during his second year at University where Arnold was elected the ‘Vice President’ for the largest African & Caribbean Society within the U.K by fellow students. He was part of 12 individuals on the committee who endeavoured to organise social events, committee meetings and thought provoking debates for more than 500 student stakeholders. During his second year, Arnold also had an article published by “Young Voices Magazine” entitled “Managing your finances.” Arnold saw a need to share his financial experiences with his student peers, so he wrote an article aimed to help students effectively manage their finances whilst at University.

As part of his degree, Arnold was required to search for a year’s work placement within an industry of his choice. The numerous rejections emails and phone calls fuelled perseverance and enhanced his faith until the situation completely turned around, leading to an offer to work as a Business Analyst for ONE of the largest Investment Banks in the world, Morgan Stanley. The life changing experience saw Arnold enter a multinational organisation where he was 1 of 3 black students chosen from 1000’s of applicants across the UK. His experience significantly developed his management ability where his main role was to co-project manage part of a $250k systems development project.

Whilst on placement, Arnold ceased the opportunity to network with as many people as possible and was selected to represent Morgan Stanley at the Choice FM Young Leaders Awards Ceremony in October 2007. Arnold was the only representative on behalf of Morgan Stanley to present to school children aged between 11-15 years.

Entering back into education in 2008 was far from daunting for Arnold, seeing that his corporate experience made him value the opportunities available within University. This spurred him to co-organise an enterprise event for young people which was headlined by Levi Roots; an event which aimed to lay the foundations of business/entrepreneurship. Attendees heard from a variety of guest speakers.

In addition, Arnold also helped to co-organise an inspirational fund raising student awards ceremony for the African Caribbean Leukemia Trust. The event led to one of the largest ever blood drives since the charity’s inception for people of Black & Asian background. The event caught the attention of the Mirror newspaper with student awards being presented by Acie Marshall, Richard Blackwood, Arnold Oceng, Ashley ‘Bashy’ Thomas, Tim Campbell and Nathaniel Peat.

In his third year, Arnold birthed and helped coordinate an information and careers networking event in partnership with the Brunel Business School & Brunel University. The reasoning behind Arnold developing the idea was to do his part to help alleviate the unemployment fears for many of his student peers. His passion to really make a difference for young people was realised in the early part of 2009 where he was the only black student representative from across the UK to present information pertaining to issues surrounding higher education to the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee at the House of Commons.

Aside from Elevation Networks Trust, Arnold’s passion for a United States of Africa is under construction. He recently founded and developed a project called APOM (A Part of Me). The first stage of the project is focused on raising awareness whereby innovative garments such as “Me FiRi GHANA” and “OMO NAIJA” have been developed

What good is knowledge if it is not shared...

On the 31st March a vision of mine will hopefully become a reality. I developed an initiative which aims to provide final year students and post graduate students at my university (Brunel) with the opportunity to increase their employability amidst turbulent times within our economy.

The initiative i developed is called project B.E.S.T (Brunel Enterprising Students Talent). My vision was taken to my faculty and has now been embraced by the heads of the university and is likely… Continue
