I am honoured to be a Griot storyteller, writer, theatre director and educator. My name Chinyere is an ancient name of the Igbo people of West Afraka. In a desire to keep harmony, a child is given a name ordained by the spiritual ancestors of the community.

Chinyere means gifted by the divine healing energy. I am humbled by my community's love, to give me the name Chinyere and the weavers of destiny who pronounced me a griot. The Griot is the bringer, bearer and holder of messages, which arrive in the first sounds of a baby, the laughter of a mother, in water drops from the heavens.

Many of us neglect the importance of “story” to nurture our spiritual strength, form our thoughts, paint our visions and focus the creative mind to achieve our goals. I have worked for over 30 years using the power of story telling and theatre to explore the pertinent themes: Contemporary and ancient principles, sexual health, emotional & educational development, identity, ritual, the environment, transitions, conflict resolutions, culture & heritage...

My work addresses the imbalance people in the diaspora feel because their story needs celebration, acknowledgment and reclaiming. We have painful stories to tell. My work supports the birthing and the nurturing of the personal story. The word sound transform is positive energy, we can benefit from.

My work has brought me into contact with many groups and individuals. I have been blessed to work with children, young people, people with physical and learning disabilities, adults, parents and elders. It is my vibe to capture their stories before they are forgotten, lost or thrown away.

I have traveled from Scotland to Europe, from the Middle East to Afraka and back learning the important lessons life has to offer. During that time I have learned to listen to my ancestors, commune with nature and connect with my inner-self. I have developed the ability to tailor design and lead workshops in oral traditions, scriptwriting, storytelling, in theatre and in movement, through the written word, the spoken word and non-verbal expression.

The participants always wish to share their expression with the community in the form of a stage performances or informal gatherings taking place, in a theatre, in the forest, large tents, in people’s living rooms, by a beach and even in the street. I am very inspired and excited when placed in a creative collaborative environment where we tap into our expression with empowering results. Watching positive growth brings joy to my heart and I affirm to the hearts of all concerned.

More than 10 of my plays have been produced for children and young people throughout Britain and Europe. I have an award in Expedition leadership, a certificate in workshop leadership, a Diploma in Theatre of the deaf, a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and an MA in Scriptwriting. I am a great believer in community learning through story and creativity. My work is a living healing expression. I continue to evolve, make new connections and love what I do! www.shanti-chi.com

Over the years I have had the privilege of working with organizations such as Royal and Dernagte Theatre, Half Moon Young Peoples Theatre, Greenwich & Lewisham Young Peoples Theatre, Royal Court Theatre, Goldsmiths university of London, Midsummer festivals, Unicorn Theatre for young people and children, WAC performing arts and media college, Beormond school for special needs, The Royal National Theatre, The Albany summer Arts college, Horniman Museum, Lewisham Young Carers, Tribe of Doris festival, Lewisham Youth Serivce, London Bubble Youth Theatre, Paddington Arts youth, The Deptford Festival, Municipal de Castries English School, Countless primary and secondary schools throughout Britain and Europe. Edinburgh Festival, Edinburgh puppet company etc.

I am guided by the divine spiritual energy, my ancestors and my community. I look forward to hearing from you. Daalu!

The Story Trail Blazer and the Free Spirit Crusaders

Once upon a time, today in London, there lives a nomadic storyteller who comes from a long line of storytellers. Ironically this nomad has been static for a very long time. Her name is Griot Chinyere. She once travelled in a mobile home between communities sharing stories and being a free spirit. Now she has been static for 18 years and her ancestors are unhappy. One night in her dreams they visit as a…

Posted by Dianne Greyson on January 23, 2019 at 18:30 0 Comments

I have a great opportunity for a Corporate to be involved with a great initiative. We are embarking on a strategy to further highlight the Ethnicity Pay Gap.  We are looking for Corporate offices to feature in a film we will be making on the Ethnicity Pay Gap. The company name will be featured in the film which will secure you as an Ambassador for the Ethnicity Pay Gap and will in turn provide you with free advertisement.  The filming will take a day to complete.
